Producing Dual Quality Dogs for Versatility, Conformation, and Companionship
Joey and Sundance Lexi vom Kristan
BergLand GSPs is a family business that began with a birthday present to Rich many years ago; Gunner was our first GSP who 'imprinted' the passion for the breed. From then on, GSPs became a part of our family and developed into a drive for excellent hunting/family companions . ..hence,
BergLand German Shorthaired Pointers.
Our farm is in the small town of Mount Nebo, West Virginia. We utilize the fields and woods specifically for raising and training dogs, puppies, and boys. Our water training and family cool off time is done at the Summersville Lake just a skip down the road.
BergLand is a small family adventure, producing only one or two litters a year. Our focus is not on multipling shorthairs but on producing superior dual quality dogs. Time is spent reseaching genetics and matching up the best combination of sire and dam on every litter. Much time is spent with the puppies from day one until they become members of another's family. We feel quality socialization is a huge thing in the development of future family member and hunting companion. Great consideration is considered when placing pups; they are a big part of our family until they become part of yours!
Our two sons, Joey and Andrew, frequently help with the training and care of our dogs. I'm sure the favorite activity is playing with the puppies. The pups receive attention daily from all family members. The hardest part is not keeping everyones favorite! I believe there is no better way to socialize pups than kids. Now that the boys are older, we have lots of kids to 'train' puppies on.
We hunt all of our dogs. An annual Michigan trip is great for the dogs, but especially for the pups. They gain confidence and bird sense in repeated contacts on partridge and woodcock (love those pup friendly woodcock.) The "older" dogs also have a great time competing with each other...who can find the most. At the end of the week, everyone is 'slap-worn out' but boasting a huge smile on our chops! This trip is always an enjoyable kick off to the bird season here in the wild mountians of WV.
At home, we hunt our dogs mostly in clear cuts and occassional duck ponds. The season runs through February, so the dogs get plenty of time to hone their noses and hunting tactics on grouse, ducks and other migratory birds of game...but mostly grouse. Not only is it challenging to hunt these birds in the mountains, its also very physical. Our dogs come out of grouse season as top athletes and polished bird dogs.
Off season is spent with quality family time and training time. When training the dogs, we use pigeons most of the time. We also train with pheasant, chuckars, quail, and mallards. We NAVHDA test our dogs and take part in training days and tests throughout the off season. All in all, we try to prepare our dogs and our selves to be two-speeds....100% on the hunt and 100% around the house.
Our goal is personal in that we want the best dogs for ourselves. With that goal, we want to produce only German Shorthaired Pointers that are both top of the line bird dogs with conformation to put them in the "Champion's" ring... and personality to boot. Our dogs are breed for both form and function....there's a reason why things are made the way they are. As good stewards to the breed, intensive research and consideration is given to each litter before, during, and after they are born.
